Hobart, like any modern city, is home to a plethora of Indian restaurants. On any street, in any suburb, you would be unlikely to walk very far without being tempted by a tandoori or lured by a lassi. Standing out from all of them, however, is Vanidol's, which not only specialises in Indian, Indonesian and Thai cuisine but does every dish it offers well.

Consequently, Indonesian rendang shares menu space with pad thai and butter chicken. Your dinner can come with krupuk (prawn crackers) or pappadams. You can even mix it up and have dahl with krupuk or yum yai with pappadams. It works a treat and the ever-friendly staff won't bat an eyelid.

Resisting the temptation to veer towards the gaudy and kitsch, chef and owner Vanidol ensures that, amid walls stylishly decorated with Indonesian shadow puppets, a meal at his restaurant is a classy experience.

Different paprikas

When using paprika make sure you are using the right variety for the dish you are cooking. The Spanish smoked paprika is ideal for paella, while the Hungarian sweet paprika is quite different in flavour and is ideal for their goulash.
