Lela Radojkovic and ex-Banc chef Matthew Kemp have not only survived, but thrived after their move to posh premises in Randwick. The two-storey sandstone building is filled with antique-style artefacts - graceful counterpoints to Kemp's modern French cuisine. The menu is contemporary but approachable, employing classic techniques to familiar dishes, with just a dash of artful flair.
Combining rich Gallic dishes (terrine of pheasant, guinea fowl and foie gras with Jerusalem artichokes, hazelnuts and pickled baby carrots) with fresh modern tastes (Suzuki mulloway, pea and spring onion emulsion with salt and pepper cuttlefish) and just a hint of charming whimsy (brussels sprouts and roast parsnips feature often), Kemp creates a bill of fare that appears simple but showcases his considerable kitchen talents. Desserts continue to excite, but the highlight is a warm chocolate fondant with ice cream and peanut brittle. While such dishes may evoke childhood memories, they are best enjoyed with the very adult indulgence of a wine from the excellent list.
