A passion for fresh produce and seasonal ingredients give this Swiss-Italian restaurant the chutzpah to move beyond the pasta-loaded menus of its peers. Fusing traditional European style with modern techniques and local ingredients, Bei Amici Restaurant is not afraid of featuring beetroot gnocchi alongside sauteed South Australian calamari. But it's in the offering of not-so-Euro dishes, such as the tartare of lime- and basil-cured ocean trout with finger lime, that shows the versatility of the chef, Felix Rutz, and the philosophy of the restaurant.
Barely a block back from eastern suburbs rush-hour traffic, this tranquil slice of Europe is made complete with timber-framed windows concertinaed aside to display trees lining the footpath dotted with twinkling fairy lights. Like the menu, the artworks adorning the walls are regularly changed to allow local artists a platform to show off their wares. This does not change the mood too dramatically, since Bei Amici's trademark dim lighting, dark tiled floors and textured walls keep the space both intimate and airy.
Emanating European elan, the atmosphere cosily tucks you in with its unobtrusive mix of classic jazz and international recordings humming in the background, which soften as the restaurant fills out on weekends and most weeknights. Meaning "beautiful friends" in Italian, Bei Amici is both beautiful and friendly.

Hot Tips
Rescuing burnt garlic
Burning garlic will make it taste bitter and unpalatable, however if you do burn your garlic while heating it in olive oil (the basis of so many French and Italian meals) simply strain out the garlic pieces - the oil will have taken on much of the flavour of the garlic already and will impart this through your dish.
Glossary
Vegetable shortening
A vegetarian alternative to lard often used in baking and when basting meat.
