Situated just outside the reflected glow of the CBD and a bit off the main drag of Elsternwick, Arabesque is a suburban local that nonetheless attracts plenty of trans-suburban attention. The reason for all the attention is the fresh and fragrant, delicate and exotic cuisine served here, blending Middle Eastern, Moroccan and Turkish elements seamlessly. The space is appropriately atmospheric, with a massive print of a bazaar scene on one wall and small Arabic trinkets littered sparingly about the room. The menu is full of simple and mildly inventive dishes, including classic favourites such as delicately spiced kibbeh and smoky baba ghanoush.

Hot Tips
Use your nut
When buying nuts, choose a seller you know has a high turnover and stores their produce in cool conditions. Heat will spoil fresh nuts by turning their volatile oils rancid.
Glossary
Masa Harina
Ground corn meal, a staple in South and Central American cuisines and used to make tortillas, pastries and fillings for snacks like tamales and pupusas.
