Melbourne, like England, has a preoccupation with pubs. Done up, run down, sticky carpets or filthy bar mats, there's a plethora of venues you can choose from and more than likely you have a handful to choose from within a five-minute stagger from your house.

The Great Northern Hotel, located on the leafy, picturesque Rathdowne Street, is thankfully one of those more done-up pubs, and has been serving up food and drinks to Carlton locals since the late 1800s. Shying from the renovation craze that seems to have exploded upon many Melburnian watering holes, the GNH still manages to ooze a bit of ye olde English charm, with a modern rooftop beer garden thrown in as an added bonus.

Inside, the dining section houses brick arches, timber panelling and wall-mounted lamps, with footy paraphernalia adorning the sides of the bar. A TV has been set up that's dedicated to AFL and is a major drawcard when footy fever's in full swing.

Paying homage to its heritage, the GNH serves up a spread of classic pub fare, with an open veggie burger and vegetarian moussaka also available to placate the non-meat eaters out there.

Sure there are better-looking pubs out there, but sometimes you just want a bit of no-frills action delivered with some fuss-free food. The Great Northern Hotel manages to deliver on both.
