Big and painted in a bright, invigorating shade of blue, Valentino's can't be faulted for being overly subtle. The bold, not-backwards-in-coming-forward attitude continues inside, where a grand staircase and a mezzanine balcony dominate the decor - don't worry ladies, you'll get your chance to play Scarlett O'Hara, as the toilets are upstairs.

Downstairs you can order meals all day, from 10am during the week and 8am on the weekends, with the kitchen staying open until about 11pm to cater for the late-night coffee crowd. Breakfast delivers a good dose of standard cafe fare, while the lunch and dinner menus offer modern Australian meals with a strong Italian influence - half the mains are pastas or risotti.

Despite the generous proportions inside, the warmer months see most people packing the outdoor area, where pavement seating affords a good view of Northbridge's passing parade. Back inside, the mezzanine level also features a large banqueting area, which can cater for seated functions of up to 140 people.

Hot Tips

Soak and steam

Sticky rice needs to be soaked in cold water for at least 4 hours before steaming. If it’s boiled, the grains will collapse and go mushy.
