My Father And The Man In Black
This stunning documentary explores the untold story of 'bad-boy' Johnny Cash, his talented but troubled manager, Saul Holiff, and a son searching for his father in the shadow of a legend.
Filmmaker Jonathan Holiff tells the story of the torrid, yet enduring relationship between Johnny Cash and his onetime manager, the director’s father, Saul Holiff. From the highs of the Folsom State Prison show through to the lows of cancelled shows and walk-offs during the 1960’s, as Cash descends into a pills, drugs and alcohol-fuelled breakdown, the two stay together, tied to one another through mutual instability and dependence. The narratives of success, addiction and depression are told through historical records, semi-animated 3d stills, carefully chosen archives and dramatic reconstructions, all complimented by recently discovered audio recordings and letters, giving the personal testimonies of both men.
