ACMI

Client name:
ACMI  - Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne

Industry:
Education, Entertainment, History

Languages:
Farsi, Spanish, English, and Arabic

Job type:
This was a complex subtitle project completed for a museum exhibition called Correspondences. As people walked through videos would repeat at various points on televisions throughout the exhibition space.

Turnaround time:
6 weeks

The task:
Thirteen videos of varying lengths were supplied as digibeta. We subtitled them into Spanish, English, Farsi and Arabic. Most videos featured split screen so two storylines were on screen at once, side by side.

These stories required two different language subtitles and the split screen work proved challenging to our existing subtitle process. We rethought our process and came up with a way to subtitle the work effectively, a technique we now use on more projects of the same complex nature.

We also had to blur existing partial subtitles that weren't consistent with our size, font and style, before reapplying ours over the top.

We delivered:
DVDs of each of the 13 videos.

Outcome:
We were granted a full credit at the end of each video which read “Subtitles provided by SBS InLanguage” and ACMI  has engaged SBS In Language for further work in Sydney and Melbourne.

Testimonial

“This was a very sensitive and challenging project for us at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. The exhibition Correspondences came to us from France but had been originally curated in Barcelona, Spain. The films were variously spoken and even sung in Farsi, Arabic and Spanish.  Unfortunately for us the films had been translated into and subtitled with French and we had no written transcript of the texts in any language at all! So the job involved translating the films, removing the French subtitles and then creating new subtitles on all the films. Not to mention some tight deadlines.

Of course SBS was the first organisation we thought of who might be able to help. And they did so splendidly, assisting us through the whole process with great skill and patience. And the artists and film-makers who travelled to Australia for the exhibition all confirmed the quality of the translations for us. I can’t thank SBS enough for assisting to realise a truly beautiful exhibition and make it understandable to English-speaking audiences.
