Anxiety
I am 48 and just diagnosed with anxiety with underlying depression - triggered by a lifetime of traumatic events. I have probably suffered it for years but with ea event I just dusted it off and got on with life. Diagnosis has come after 6 months of thinking I was going through menopause. Told I am not crazy I would like to know why question is asked when applying for work and life insurance - "Have you ever suffered anxiety or depression". One is still normal even if not always smiling :)

Generalised Anxiety
I'm 18 years old & I've had anxiety since the age of 8.It comes out of no where, and my panic attacks which include muscle shakes, difficulty breathing and dizziness scare me almost to fainting. I often don't tell anybody that I'm having a panic attack because they tell me that I'm just overreacting, or to go to sleep and calm down, or that I "don't exercise enough". I'm glad tonight's show informed viewers that Anxiety isn't unusual, and that we aren't just overreacting.it's real!!

What a smart and well dressed group of people on tonights programme. Having been there and done that I can add my voice to the view that it's not so much the event it's getting to sleep post event without it going around and around in your head. Lexipro distraced me for 6 months but didn't resolve the issue. The cause was in my head, as was the solution. Just keep leaving the house my friends, time is a great healer. Peter x

Too one sided
What a great show, but, Gavin Andrews unfortunately I think simplifies it too much. He talked so much about the 90% success rate with cognitive therapy BUT what about the other 10%????????? This was not addressed at all. This show was focused too much just on cognitive therapy and not enough discussion about medication. For example not one audience member who spoke was asked whether they were or have been on medication for this disorder. Health problems that cause anxiety was also not mentioned.

Anxiety
My son has been suffering from anxiety for two years now and I feel helpless just watching him suffering through those moments. I found the the program to be informative and interesting and some of the story told, sounded just what my son is experiencing. I would love to give this program ago. The ease of your own home is even better. Thank you for a great show.

Story in common
Hi Donnella I too have a son who has suffered with anxiety for some years. As a parent I feel helpless at times and the mother/therapist thing does not work well as there is too much emotional content involved. I had to write as a found it amazing that I identify with your post and then looked to see your christian name is the same as mine. Best Wishes Donella

Anxiety
Even though I believe my anxiety levels are not high, I have learnt over the years to be positive about a situation that takes me out of my comfort zone. So I have to agree, it has a lot to do with what we tell ourselves. Very interesting program & great to hear anxiety can be treated & cured.

anxiety
In reply to Bean, my panic attacks started out of the blue, sitting at a traffic light. I wasn't thinking anything negative, just going home from shopping. The panic was so bad I have vowed never to put myself in that situation again. I felt like it was all I could do to stay sane, and not faint at the wheel. Aweful stuff. I am a happy and positive thinking person, so I don't get it.

anxiety
I have suffered from anxiety from about 10 years old. The worst anxiety coming during sleep, which could not be managed by what we tell ourselves. I would like to learn more about helping my anxieties besides managing it with high dosages of anti-depressants (last 5-10 Years). I am a very positive person who always faces my fears, alas the anxiety comes when I have a sequence of traumatic events happen to me.

Anxiety in young children
My 7 year old suffers from Generalised Anxiety. This majorily impacts on his everyday life. He has now been suspended from school due to fight for life behaviour (panic attack) symptoms. He shuts down and is severally depressed. My little man is sad and hates his life. He is doing cognitive therapy behaviour work but I feel that it is up and down. It is a slow and expensive process. I want more help!! I feel my little man is lost.

Acceptance Commitment Therapy
John, I was an anxious kid and this continued throughout my life. I sort cbt therapy with little sustained effect. However a few years ago a psychologist suggested a new therapy called ACT which stands for Acceptance Commitment Therapy. The results were fantastic and long lasting...I no longer struggle with anxiety. I would recommend the book called "The Happiness Trap" by Russ Harris and seeking a pyschologist who is trained in ACT. Hope this helps!

Anxiety in children
My son also 7 years old, suffers from Generalised Anxiety and quite possibly OCD. I too see the impact this is taking on his life and my heart aches seeing him so sad and lonely. He has regular 'play therapy' with our family worker who gets him to open up through playing, about how he is feeling and ways to help him when he feels anxious and nervous. Is there a family support service in your area that you could try to get some help for your son. This is a free service too.Good luck.x

My manifestations of anxiety presented at bout 3 yrs old[undiagnosed] so i'm a huge believer in the genetic aspect. History of it in family. If you compound this with the effects of trying to function/evolve in society from so young, well its like a horrific episode of Survivor! I'm still on the island, not all techniques ive tried have been good. Everyone is unique in their history regardless of similar symptoms so the same 'help' doesnt always fit. Keep on the island people, it is worth it!!
