Response to Voice of Experience
Sorry about your experience. You will find that at the time of the Prophet Muhammed when the actual teachings of Islam were in place, people of other faith would flee to the Muslim nations for justice & protection. Currently majority of the Muslims governments have corrupt rulers who fail to practice Islam as it is meant to be. Hence you will find that Muslims who have actually Studied their religion properly are model citizens & much more representative of our faith. Not the other way around!

Islam
Hi, I am an Australian born muslim convert. My parents are both typical anglo white parents. Look past the mask of extremists Islam to the peaceful people, maybe Shariah is incompatible with Australian law, but that doesn't mean Muslims are. You tell me to go back to my own country? How can I? My ancestors have lived in Australia since the boats bought them over. Give us a break, this is our home.

Islam and the media
Hi I'm an Australian born muslim and strongly believe that many people are blindly follow what they have been dictated by the media and as a result, 'islamophobia' has risen. The prophet has said, 'forgive him who wrongs you; join him who cuts you off; do good to him who does evil to you, and speak the truth although it be against yourself'. The media has used every chance to degrade islam and create an atmosphere of hatred, by highlighting the minority. I apologise if I have harmed any belief.

The reality is simply that Islam and the beliefs, values and behaviours of its followers are simply NOT compatible with those of Australia and the average Australian. To think otherwise is both naive and dangerous. Respect for Muslims and Islamic counties is absolutely necessary, as with all other people, religions and nations. It does not, however, mean that we have to accommodate people with such fundamentally different beliefs, values and behaviours as our own.

The truth - Remove the rose coloured glasses.
I’m a Christian female Aussie raised by Middle Eastern parents. They fled an Islamic country due to persecution. They came to Australia, so that I might enjoy the freedoms they were deprived. Educated Muslims profess they are ashamed of radicals or terrorism; however the academics are as true a representation of the majority of Muslims as Croc Dundee is a true representation of the majority of Aussies. I resent implications that fears of Islam are unfounded (or racist). They are legitimate.

Islam and the West
In every population there will be outliers and we need to stop playing our heartstrings and basing opinions on the small numbers of good apples. We need only look at the countries in the world that are majority muslim to see what it brings. I resent being forced to adjust our way of life, which has been earned through blood and sacrifice and hard work in order not to "offend" people from a region which doesn't seem to be able to move itself forward. No more. Change or leave. We earned our status.

Question for Tim
Hi Tim. In response to your comment: "I resent being forced to adjust our way of life....in order not to "offend" people from a region which doesn't seem to be able to move itself forward." I want to ask you for specific examples of times when you've had to adjust your "way of life" in order not to offend. I am an Anglo-Australian person and I hear these sentiments coming from other Anglo-Australians, however I cannot provide any examples of this from my own experience, perhaps only in the media

freedom of religion
Freedom of Religion in any society is highly influenced by society stucture and proportion of religious group in it. Based on my observation of muslim societies, the bigger they are, the smaller is the tolerance for different opinions and religions and the higher probability of attacks against those who disagree with their fules. Therefore i believe that the more muslims there are in australian society, the more conficts we can expect on day-to-day basis.

Is anti-Islam sentiment rising?
My oath it is and I believe most of it is fuelled by the inflammatory comments of populist political policy. I am a secondary English teacher. During the last election campaign I was amazed at the increase in racist comments brought into my classroom by students reacting to Abbot's 'Stop the boats' slogan. For the record, I teach in a Catholic school which promotes Christian love and compassion.

Freedom from religion
What people need to understand is that the issue is not only about freedom of, but also from religion. I don't care if people want to be religious, but I do care that, when our government formulates its policies, that this is done independently of religious ideologies. We are supposedly a secular democracy and politicians/religious people need to be mindful that non-religious people, like myself, have the same rights and we don't want religion to have any kind of influence in our lives.

Islam
im going to be a revert to Islam soon so i have both eyes on both opinions so to speak. i've once thought muslims were terrorists from all the media and have judged the women on of WHY they cover themselves etc. heard of the saying "NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER"? in literal terms don't judge the book of Islam by its cover, you will be astonished in what you'll discover once you've actually read, question, SEE the life of REAL muslims and the way they treat each other THEN make ur judgement.
