The legendary actor will shoot an action thriller in Melbourne.

Robert De Niro has signed onto The Killer Elite, a $66m action thriller currently shooting in Melbourne.

De Niro joins Jason Statham and Clive Owen in cast of the film, which is being directed by Gary McKendry and is financed by Australian production/post production giant, Omnilab Media.

The Killer Elite follows the exploits of a group of Black Ops agents for hire who must hunt down and destroy a rogue cell of SAS killer assassins and their covert handlers. The script is based on Sir Ranulph Fiennes' 1993 non fiction novel The Feather Men.

Australian actors in the cast include Dominic Purcell, Yvonne Strahovski, Ben Mendelsohn, Aden Young and Firass Dirani.

International Sales of the project are being handled by Inferno ntertainment's Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson.
