Victorian Agriculture Minister Joe Helper says plague locusts have infested the north of the state and he warns that locust swarms can migrate hundreds of kilometres given the right weather and wind conditions.

He said swarms have been sighted in parts of northern Victoria and in the NSW regions of Condobolin, Narrandera and the southern Forbes area.

"A driver's ability to see the road and oncoming traffic can be significantly reduced by locust swarms," Mr Helper said.

"Driving through locust swarms can also block radiators, causing vehicles to overheat."

RACV chief engineer, vehicles Michael Case has issued a few tips for motorists who find themselves in the middle of a swarm of locusts.

These include attaching an insect screen on their car's external radiator air-inlet for extra protection and carrying spare water and extra insect cleaning agent and cloths to wipe down the windscreen.
