Australians have been told to reconsider travelling to Thailand because of an increased threat of terrorist attacks.

Australians have been told to reconsider travelling to Thailand because of an increased threat of terrorist attacks, political unrest and severe congestion at airports.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade upgraded its travel advice for Thailand on Wednesday, despite anti-government protests ending there on Tuesday.

The advice comes as Qantas and Jetstar have been able to move more than 1,000 stranded Australians from the country.

Protesters staged a week-long blockade at the nation's major airports, which left thousands of travellers stranded.

Three of Thailand's ruling coalition parties have agreed to dissolve, increasing political uncertainty in the short-term.

Australians should seriously consider their need to travel because of the political uncertainty, Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said.

The travel warning says there is a high threat of terrorist attack.

"We continue to receive reports that terrorists may be planning attacks against a range of targets, including tourist areas and other places frequented by foreigners," the warning says.
