Nationals chief Barnaby Joyce says emissions trading scheme in economic climate will cause job losses.

Nationals leader in the Senate Barnaby Joyce says he cannot support an emissions trading scheme (ETS) in the current economic climate because it will cause job losses.

In another headache for Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull, Senator Joyce says caution is the best approach.

"America has 533,000 new unemployed people as of last month, the ramifications around the world are becoming immense, I think the last thing we want to do is put more Australians out of work," Senator Joyce told Sky News on Wednesday.

"The ETS is a tax in its current form in the current climate which will put people out of work and it's our job to keep them in work."

The opposition is against the Labor government's plan for an ETS to start in 2010, preferring a start in 2011 or 2012 but Senator Joyce says it will push industry offshore and worsen the economic situation.

"I think caution is the best approach in something that will put immense stress on Australian working families and put them out of work," Senator Joyce said.
