Car rental company owner Edwin Chan drew anger from both sides of the Tasman after insisting the parents of Akshay and Ashish Miranda pay a fee of about $NZ2,000 ($A1,650).
Akshay Miranda, 22, is believed to have been carrying the keys to the Toyota hire car when he and his brother Akshay, 24, were killed under hundreds of tonnes of ice and rocks at the South Island's Fox Glacier last Thursday.
Constable Paul Gurney from Franz Josef Police Station said he had been approached by an Auckland man, who wished to remain anonymous, but would pay the outstanding bill.
"I had a phone call today from a man living in Auckland wanting to pay the bill. I have sent his details off to the family. They may give him a ring or just say thank you," Const Gurney said on Wednesday.
"The public are a bit, not outraged, but just think it is insensitive what the rental company has done."
The cost the car company is claiming would cover towing the car back to Wellington, in the North Island, and new keys for the vehicle, Chan reportedly said.
Chan has said his company NZRCS Rental Cars would not write off the costs because other groups such a the towing company would continue to charge his business for the work.
Meanwhile, it is expected the parents of the dead men, Ronnie and Winnie Miranda, will return to Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon with the body of Ashish.
Authorities in New Zealand are yet to unearth the body of Akshay, and have said the remains may not be recovered until there is another big ice collapse or a flood dislodges the corpse.
