The Japanese are perceived by the outside world as a fairly reticent people, but for one day a year men are urged to gather in a Tokyo park and shout "love messages" to their wives.

Local man Kiyotaka Yamana started the initiative after his own marriage failed.

"From my own experience, communication between a husband and wife can be difficult sometimes at home. So why not do

it out in the public? It refreshes your communication," Yamana says.

Many of the dozen men who gathered in the park shouted simple messages of love and appreciation.

Others, however, took a more practical view of relationships.

"I never thought married life would be this wonderful," one man yells. "Please continue fixing nice meals."

But whatever the message, many of the women present were moved by the sentiment expressed by their men-folk.
