COFA graduate Tony Curran has submitted his first entry into the prize, a portrait of Simon Hunt who rose to fame as Pauline Pantsdown (SBS)

Entries for the famed Archibald portrait prize close today, with the Art Gallery of New South Wales accepting work from hopeful artists across the country vying for the $50,000 prize.

The esteemed portraiture prize attracted close to 700 portraits last year, with subjects ranging from Australian fashion designer Akira Isogawa to indie musician Sarah Blasko.  Portraits submitted must be painted from life, with at least one physical sitting required.

In addition to this the subjects must be prominent or distinguished national figures, with entries completed by an Australian resident.

The winner will be announced early next month, alongside finalists to be included in the annual exhibition.

The Packing Room Prize will be awarded to a work selected by gallery staff of the Art Gallery of NSW who are responsible for the reception, sorting, storing and installation of Archibald entries.

The 2008 Archibald Prize was won by Del Kathryn Barton for her self portrait ‘You are what is most beautiful about me, a self portrait with Kell and Arella.’
