Australians pledged more than $20.5 million for the Red Cross Bushfire appeal during a telethon on Thursday night, adding to the more than $50 million already raised for victims.

The nation continues to offer support for victims of Victoria's bushfires, with a host of celebrities turning out to raise money to help fire-ravaged communities rebuild their lives.

Thursday night's Australia Unites telethon raised $21,502,485, the Nine Network said, and featured politicians, musicians, actors and sports stars.

It brings the money donated so far, including pledges, to $77,202,485.

The Red Cross says it has so far counted more than $63 million in donations.

Nine Network chief executive David Gyngell said the network was "overwhelmed by the generosity of all Australians".

"We ... hope the donations made tonight help to alleviate some of the hardship ahead for those affected," he said.

The bushfires have killed at least 181 people and destroyed more than a thousand homes.
