The death toll from the worst wildfires in Australian history has risen to 200, with the news that 11 more bodies have been found.

The death toll from the worst wildfires in Australian history has risen to 200, police announced on Tuesday.

The updated figure - an increase of 11 confirmed deaths since yesterday - came after more bodies were found in the wreckage of homes across the region.

Five new sets of remains were discovered in the badly-hit town of Kinglake, three in Marysville, two in Strathewen and one at Strath Creek.

Authorities say a total of 139 people died in the Kinglake blazes, including 42 at Strathewen, and 37 in Kinglake itself.

Another 39 died at Marysville, where the fire razed much of the town to the ground.

Five of those who survived the blazes themselves later died of their injuries in hospital.

"Victoria Police believe the provisional fatalities from the 2009 bushfires have climbed from 189 to 200," a spokesman said.
