An earth tremor measuring magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale has rocked metropolitan Melbourne.

An earth tremor measuring magnitude 4.6 on the Richter scale has rocked metropolitan Melbourne.

The tremor was felt in Reservoir in the city's north to Kew and Cheltenham, southeast of Melbourne just before nine.

Duty seismologist at Geoscience Australia Phil Cummins says the  tremor measured 4.6 but the epicentre has not yet been pinpointed.

Victorian State Emergency Service spokesman Aiien Briggs says there's been reports the tremor was felt in metropolitan Melbourne and as far down as Warragul and Leongatha in Gippsland.

He says the service has been inundated with phone calls but there's been no reports of any damage.
