The Land and Environment Court has rejected plans for an Islamic school in Sydney's south western suburb of Camden.

Controversial plans for a 900 student Islamic school in Sydney's south west have been rejected by the Land and Environment Court.

Camden Council voted unanimously in May to reject plans for the proposed school, at the corner of Cawdor and Burragarong Roads in Camden, after months of heated community meetings and the release of an adverse planner's report.

The report cited traffic and environmental reasons for its decision.

An appeal by the school's backers, The Quranic Society, was rejected by the Land and Environment Court in Sydney.

The court ruled the proposed educational institution, which was to have accommodated 540 primary school students and 360 secondary school students, did not comply with the site's zoning restrictions.
