- Public hospital system 'failing obese'
* Obesity should be listed on Medicare Benefits Schedule as a chronic disease, requiring an individual management plan.
* GPs should help collate data on height and weight of patients so accurate obesity statistics can be gathered.
* Federal government should investigate ways tax incentives could make healthy foods more affordable, particularly for people living in rural and remote areas.
* Health Minister Nicola Roxon should commission research to establish the cost of obesity .. and the effect of junk food advertising on the eating patterns of children and other vulnerable groups.
* Results of Food Standards Australia New Zealand food labelling review should be used to establish guidelines to ensure food labels provide consistent nutritional information.
* Adequacy of guidelines surrounding weight loss products and programs should be reviewed.
