Michael Jackson has died of cardiac arrest (AAP)

News of the death of Michael Jackson has created a massive spike in online traffic, as millions across the globe turned to the internet for the latest news on the popstar.

Celebrity gossip site TMZ.com was the first to break the news of the performer's death, after an alleged tip-off from a paramedic who was at the scene.

Within minutes of TMZ making the announcement, news had spread through social networking sites such as facebook and twitter, as well as several entertainment blogs.

The flurry of activity temporary caused the TMZ site to crash, and a little while later, twitter.com was temporary brought down by increased traffic.
