Timeline of events in Iran since election
Key events in Iran since the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Key events in Iran since the disputed re-election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad:
JUNE 2009:
12: About 85 per cent of Iran's eligible voters turn out for the presidential election, with Ahmadinejad and Mir Hossein Mousavi, a former prime minister, the favourites.
- Soon after the end of polling, Mousavi claims victory but an announcement on the official IRNA news agency declares Ahmadinejad the "definite winner."
13: Ahmadinejad is declared re-elected with almost 63 per cent, a result immediately contested by Mousavi and his supporters. Clashes erupt in Tehran.
16: At least seven people die in post-election violence. The government restricts foreign media coverage.
19: Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei backs Ahmadinejad's victory and warns against protests.
20: Ten more people die in street protests. One is a young woman, Neda Agha-Soltan, whose death is filmed and shown on websites around the world.
23: Iran expels two British diplomats after accusing London and other foreign powers of fomenting the unrest. Britain retaliates by expelling Iranian diplomats.
- US President Barack Obama, who has sought to improve relations with Iran, says he is "outraged" by the crackdown.
25: Ahmadinejad warns Obama to stop meddling.
- Top dissident cleric Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri warns that the suppression of protests could threaten the foundations of the Islamic republic.
28: Iran arrests nine local British embassy staff. All are later released.
29: The powerful Guardians Council confirms Ahmadinejad's victory but Mousavi demands a new election.
JULY:
9: Police break up rallies held to mark the anniversary of a wave of student unrest in 1999.
17: Ex-president and powerful cleric Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani calls for the release of hundreds of people rounded up and says Iran is in crisis.
18: Khamenei orders Ahmadinejad to fire his controversial aide Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie who was appointed first vice president.
25: Rahim Mashaie steps down after Khamenei's order and pressure from hardliners. The following day Ahmadinejad sacks his intelligence minister and his culture minister resigns amid continued political turmoil.
28: Iranian authorities release 140 protesters but about 250 remain behind bars out of an estimated 2,000 initially detained. An MP says 30 people were killed in the unrest.
30: On the 40th day after the death of Neda Agha-Soltan, opposition supporters stage mourning rallies at a cemetery and in central Tehran, but are forcibly dispersed by police, who say they made 50 arrests.
AUGUST:
1: Iran puts around 100 people on trial accused of rioting, with one reformist saying the election was clean.
2: Khatami condemns the trial and Mousavi says some protesters confessed under torture, while the authorities say another 10 people are put on trial and hardliners accuse the opposition leaders of treason.
- A group of hardline MPs files a complaint against Mousavi to the judiciary.
