Rebiya Kadeer has told World News Australia Uighurs would 'love to see peace' between her people and the Chinese, as she arrives in Australia for the screening of a controversial documentary.

The Uighur activist has told SBS: "I would absolutely love to see peace between the Uighur people and Chinese people".

"That's what we have been struggling for for a long time," Ms Kadeer says, "but the Chinese government instead created instability."

Ms Kadeer has arrived in Australia in time for Saturday's screening of a controversial documentary on her life, Ten Conditions of Love, at the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF).

Read the SBS film blog on the festival.

The Chinese government has demanded organisers of the festival pull the movie, with Australia's ambassador in Beijing being summoned to explain the situation.

Chinese hackers also bombarded the MIFF website to protest against organisers' decision to screen the documentary.

We are a country that upholds religious freedom and tolerance. No other country should be able to tell us who we can include and exclude into our country.MRS Kadeer is a peaceful freedom fighter and those values are admired in our democratic country. Immigrants who choose to live in Australia should only be accepted into Australia if they are tolerant to peaceful religions.
