Opposition emissions trading spokesman Andrew Robb tells SBS the government is trying to rush the emissions trading scheme and could prove costly in the long term.

Opposition emissions trading spokesman Andrew Robb tells SBS the government is trying to rush the emissions trading scheme and could prove costly in the long term.

Mr Robb told SBS's Anton Enus, if the ETS is implemented wrongly it could harm future generations.

"If we don't get it right we will export not only jobs, but we will export emissions and do very little for the environment", he says.

Mr Robb had hoped the government would take its time when looking at such a huge initiative and are simply rushing to put it in place.

"It's very important that the Government take its time and not just play politics. I think they want to go to an early election on this issue rather than take the time, get the policy right, and do what's in the national interest", he told SBS World News Australia.

The Opposition has blasted the government's plan over the ETS, saying it could cost the country thousands of jobs.

It also accuses the government of being misinformed on the issue, saying the scheme wouldn't have any real environmental impact either.

"This is unacceptable, if you won't change it now we will vote against it in the Senate (today). Then, when they bring something back, hopefully, they will have made the modifications that will get the support of the parliament", he says.
