The Indian PM has told Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard that he appreciates the government's response to violence against Indian students studying in Australia.

The environment, defence and education have been top of the agenda in a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The meeting on Tuesday at the home of Dr Singh took place during a five day visit to India by Ms Gillard and precedes a trip by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd later this year.

Dr Singh said his government wanted to see Australia and India forge closer ties when it came to the economy, counter-terrorism, security and energy.

He and Ms Gillard also discussed recent violence against Indian students studying in Australia.

Dr Singh said he appreciated the federal government's handling of the issue.

On the subject of climate change, he said the two nations needed to work together to find practical, pragmatic and viable solutions to global warming.

There were opportunities to conduct bilateral climate change research, he added.

Ms Gillard will now travel to Chennai to meet with local officials and see collaborations between Indian and Australian universities on information technology and security.

She said the meeting with Dr Singh was warm and engaging.
