William and Harry became suspicious when private information started appearing in British tabloid newspaper, News of the World.

Metropolitan Police have raised the possibility in a committee attended by Detective Chief Superintendent Philip Williams.

When asked if he suspected journalists had hacked into the princes' mobile phones, Mr Williams told the committee: "Yes, I think they may well have done."

Former News of the World Royal editor Clive Goodman was jailed for four months in 2007 after admitting hacking into hundreds of messages on mobile phones belonging to aides of the Royal Family. Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator was also sent to prison for his involvement in the affair.

The two men had made over 600 calls to retrieve private messages from mobile phones belonging to the princes' personal secretary, private secretary and The Prince of Wales' communications secretary.

Supermodel Elle Macpherson was also targetted. She was so bothered she had her house swept for bugging devices.
