Samson and Delilah will be Australia's official entry for nomination consideration for the Academy Awards.

The love story about two Aboriginal teenagers living in central Australia will be entered for consideration in the best foreign language film category, Screen Australia has announced.

Written and directed by Warwick Thornton and produced by Kath Shelper, Samson and Delilah is shot predominantly in the Aboriginal language Walpiri.

Camera d'Or winner at Cannes

Each country can submit one film for nomination consideration, and a committee of industry professionals chose Samson and Delilah over the other eligible film, Van Diemen's Land.

The film, which stars Rowan McNamara as Samson and Marissa Gibson and Delilah, won the Camera d'Or for best first feature at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and has also screened at the Telluride and Toronto film festivals.

Samson and Delilah has taken $3.17 million at the Australian box office after 20 weeks of release, making it the highest grossing Australian film of the year.

It will open in the UK, France and New Zealand over the next two months.

The 82nd Academy Award nominations will be announced on February 2, 2010, with the awards handed out on March 7.
