A medical team of 22 medical experts, plus supplies, are on the ground to help out in earthquake-devastated Padang in Indonesia.

It's the latest delivery to come out of Australia's emergency response in the wake of last week's 7.6-magnitude earthquake, which has killed at least 704 people.

The arrival consists of 22 medics, with stores for self sustainment and basic medical supplies.

They will co-ordinate with emergency crews already on the ground before being deployed to determine which areas they can best serve, Australian Defence Force (ADF) Lieutenant Colonel Neil Sweeney said.

It is the first step to creating a field hospital, should it be required, which could provide for general medical assistance and 24-hour surgeries, include a nursing unit, radiology, pathology and a psychological support team. It would be staffed by up to 80 personnel.
