Peter Costello and Brendan Nelson have officially resigned from parliament, House of Representatives Speaker Harry Jenkins has told the lower house.

Peter Costello and Brendan Nelson have officially resigned from parliament, House of Representatives Speaker Harry Jenkins has told the lower house.

Both MPs - former ministers in the previous Howard government - handed their letters of resignation to the speaker earlier on Monday.

"Consideration is being given to the possible dates for the by-elections," Mr Jenkins said, adding he would consult with the major parties and others before making a decision.

The by-elections in Bradfield (NSW) and Higgins (Victoria) are expected to be held at the end of November.
