Scientists in the United Kingdom are working on harnessing the enormous potential of wave power.

Owen Sweeney, Head of the Ocean Energy Develoopment United in Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) Dublin, says they've successfully harnessed wave power.

"We have the potential to produce, from wave alone, two or three times our entire consumption which will be maybe 15,000 megawatts", he says.

However other agencies around the globe are also looking into developing successful wave energy breakthroughs.

Mr Sweeney says there's a lot of competition in the clean energy sector.

"The challenge for us is whether we're going to be among the players that unlock this technology."

Wave power is expensive compared to other renewable initiatives such as wind

But with continued government support, the hope is that costs should eventually come down as the industry is scaled up.
