Students at the University of California have set a new world record, making the longest sushi roll measuring in over 100 metres.

The world's longest California roll was made at the university, according to Consul General of Japan, Yasumasa Nagamine.

Organisers lined up dozens of tables that were manned by students and campus employees, creating a 100 metres of a California roll, complete with avocado, cucumber and faux crab meat.

At the end of the roll, there was an additional 15 feet (4.57 metres) of vegetarian California roll made with tofu.

The previous record of 300 feet (91.44 metres) was set in Hawaii in 2001, Berkeley spokeswoman Kathleen Maclay said.

The first table to begin rolling all the ingredients together was staffed by members of the Japanese Graduate and Researchers Society, who dressed in ninja costumes.

The roll was made from 90.72 kilograms of dry rice, 36.29kg each of cucumber and avocado, and 81.65kg of fish.

The event was the latest in a series of celebrations for the 50th anniversary of UC Berkeley's Centre for Japanese Studies, professor Duncan Williams said.

The yearlong celebration ends in December and will include a summit meeting of the heads of Japanese studies departments from across the United States to discuss the future of their field, Williams said.
