Australia held the first-day honours against the Windies at the break at 3-210.

Uncompromising opener Simon Katich was denied a Gabba century just before tea on the opening day of the three-Test series against the West Indies.

Katich's aggressive innings came to an end when he edged an innocuous Dwayne Bravo delivery down the leg-side to diving wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin and was dismissed for 92.

Australia still held the first-day honours at the break at 3-210 with Mike Hussey unbeaten on 47 and Michael Clarke four not out.

The West Indies took two wickets in the middle session to stay in touch after the home side won the toss and batted.

Pace tyro Kemar Roach (1-34) broke through first by earning the big scalp of Ricky Ponting (55) with a fine piece piece of seam bowling shortly after lunch.

Roach, who was unlucky not to have the Australian skipper leg before an over earlier, had Ponting caught behind with a ball that faintly left the right-hander.

121 run by Katich and Ponting

It ended a 121-run second-wicket stand by Katich and Ponting, who came together in the third over of the day when Shane Watson fell to Jerome Taylor for a duck.

Katich, who has become Australia's most reliable batsman since taking over as opener 18 months ago, was given a life on 81 when dropped at short cover-point by Sulieman Benn off Bravo (1-58).

The NSW left-hander hit 13 boundaries and a six in his classy 135-ball stay.

His close mate Hussey was streaky early, edging the unlucky Bravo throught the slips cordon twice, but quickly found his eye to pull and cut with authority in a 74-run union.
