Queen Sophia of Spain is Central America visiting El Salvador and Guatemala to get a first-hand update on the situation there in the aftermath of Hurricane Stan.

In Guatemala the Queen met with refugees placed in a public school, where the affected received aid donated by Spain.

In El Salvador she had the opportunity to watch by video the disaster caused by the Ilamatepec volcano eruption, which added to the devastation provoked by Stan’s intense rain.

“I just want to bring you the love expressed by the Spanish people and to help in the best way we can”, the Queen said to orphans and victims of the disaster that were present to shake her hand.

The tragedy left 1,500 people dead and more than one million without shelter.

Spain has already sent 150 tonnes of aid to the area and €50 million.
