Staff at a Spanish travel agency, who were reportedly about to lose their jobs, are celebrating after winning 584 million euros ($A 950 million) on the ‘El Gordo’ Christmas lottery.

The annual lottery is one of the most popular in Spain, because of its large prizes of millions of Euros.

According to the Telegraph newspaper in the UK, the employees of the Grupo Marsans travel agency in the Canary Islands were facing redundancy, but are now collectively richer than their troubled boss.

The Christmas lottery includes 180 tickets, or series, per 5-digit number, with each worth 200 euros ($A325). The tickets are sold to the public in tenths for 20 euros ($A32.50) each.

The jackpot, called 'El Gordo', is worth 3 million euros ($A4.9 million) per ticket. The winning number was 78294.
