Rain and overcast conditions haven't dampened Sydneysiders' passion for a Boxing Day bargain with shoppers flocking to the CBD.

Rain and overcast conditions haven't dampened Sydneysiders' passion for a Boxing Day bargain with shoppers flocking to the CBD as major retailers opened their doors at dawn.

Myer's city store led the charge, opening at 5am (AEDT), preceded by entertainment, competitions and prizes in Pitt Street Mall.

David Jones opened an hour later with thousands of customers flooding in the store's many entrances and jamming onto escalators.

Discounts are available across all categories of goods, with clothing proving particularly popular.

At 8am (AEDT) crowds continued to queue outside smaller boutique stores in other parts of the city including the Queen Victoria Building.

NSW residents will spend $4.537 billion between Boxing Day and January 15 - an increase on last year's figure of $4.40 billion, economic modelling by Access Economics for the Australian National Retailers Association (ANRA) indicates.

Olympians Ian Thorpe and Stephanie Rice rang the bell to mark the opening of the David Jones Sydney store at 6am (AEDT) and a short time later shared their shopping styles.

"There's two strategies, mine is like slow and steady and Steph's is just (to) go for everything," Thorpe told the Nine Network.

Many shoppers were happy to adopt the "go hard" approach as the elbows came out to force a route through the crowd and to be the first to reach the racks.

ANRA chief executive Margy Osmond will comment on the start of the Boxing Day sales retail figures on Saturday morning.
