With the Dubai's Burj holding its place as the world's tallest tower and creeping ever skyward, SBS looks at the global top ten.

1. Burj Dubai

The Burj was built in 2010, and reportedly stands at a whopping 818 metres. Its true height is being kept secret to avoid it being superceded.

2. Taipei 101

Taipei's imposing financial centre stands 300 metres shorter than the Burj, at a not-unimpressive 509 metres.

3. Shanghai World Financial Centre

At 492 metres, the Shanghai World Financial Centre is another in a list of skyscrapers built to accomodate the money business across Asia ...

4. International Commerce Centre

... As is Hong Kong's 483-metre ICC. Like all of its Asia-region counterparts, it was built speedily and within the last two years.

5. Petronas Towers

In equal fifth place, the imposing spires of Kuala Lumpur's 452-metre towers kept them at world number one position from 1998 until 2004, when they were pipped by Taipei 101.

7. Nanjing Greenland Financial Center

China ticks all the boxes again, with a 450-metre spired finance centre in the city of Nanjing. It does, however, overlook a lake and offer an unobstructed view of the Yangtze River.

8. Willis Tower

Out of Asia for eighth place, Chicago's Willis Tower was built much longer ago too. It stands at 442 metres and is 37 years old.

9. Guangzhou West Tower

And back to China, where Guangzhou's 440-metre conference, hotel and office building began construction in 2005.

10. Jin Mao Tower

Again in Shanghai, the Jin Mao Tower has looked 421 metres down onto the city since 1998.

.... And for the building that has been bumped off by Dubai's last record-breaking effort:

11. Two International Finance Centre

Another Hong Kong skyscraper, which stands at a little over half the Burj's stature with 416 metres, the Two International Finance Centre was built in 2003.

It is followed one close metre behind by the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago.
