Australia's diplomatic team responsible for putting the nation's case on whaling to the rest of the world is costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, while the mammals continue to be killed in the Southern Ocean.

Head of the Australian whaling envoy, Sandy Holloway, is set to receive up to $200,000 for 100 days work, while a further $342,000 has already been spent on international travel by the former bureaucrat and his team as they travel the globe, The Daily Telegraph newspaper reports.

Adviser to former prime minister Bob Hawke, Mr Holloway was appointed to the whaling position in October 2008 on a $1,800 a day retainer, an agreement due to expire on June 30.

The total cost of the envoy could reach $700,000 to $800,000 by mid-year, the reported on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Japan continues killing whales in the Southern Ocean in the name of scientific research, despite widespread protests.

Environment Minister Peter Garrett defended Mr Holloway's pay saying the envoy had been "putting Australia's case strongly at meetings with both like-minded and pro-whaling nations".
