SBS speaks with Jamie Te Huna, a young Australian hoping to make it big in the world of mixed martial arts next month when the Ultimate Fighting Championship comes to Sydney.

Mixed martial arts is a brutal blend of boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, jujitsu and karate.

Opponents face off in an octagonal ring bound by netting and often have to go through gruelling training regimes in order to be fit enough to fight.

Jamie Te Huna, from Elite Fight Gym in Sydney's west is a light heavyweight and trains three times a day, six days a week.

He's one of a handful of Australians looking to make it big in the world of the Ultimate Fighting Championship – a league expected to be worth over $1 billion.

Fighting is no longer a hobby, it's a full time job and Jamie hopes to be a role model to both Australian and New Zealand youth.

"I was a brick layer, going straight from work to training was just too much", he tells SBS.

"I gave up work and borrowed some money from family and friends. I had some big fights coming up and I knew it would eventually open doors if I got through those fights".

The gamble opened doors, the 27 year old now has a record of 11 wins and four losses.

Good luck.

But to the host and everyone else please stop calling the sport "cage fighting" its MMA (mixed martial arts). Cage fighting sounds like 2 guys brawling bare knuckle, with no skill or training. Where as MMA sounds like it involves martial art skill and training.

Sweet bro

I've been following the UFC for years - stoked to finally have some homegrown talent to follow. I'll be watching 110 on TV but hopefully an exciting win and I'll see you live at a UFC in Europe soon!!
