When the Black Saturday bushfires swept across Victoria, the human suffering they caused was plain to see - but what of the wildlife hurt in the disaster?

The fires left thousands of animals - from koalas and wombats to birds and domestic pets - seriously injured, either from burns or smoke inhalation.

But a year on from the deadly blazes that ravaged the state on February 7, 2009, wildlife carer Sue Kirwin says the wounds are finally beginning to heal.
