Goodluck fills in as Nigeria president

Nigeria's Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has accepted the post of acting president while the country's head of state, President Umaru Yar'Adua, receives treatment abroad for a heart problem.

"The circumstances in which I find myself assuming office today as acting president of our country are uncommon, sober and
reflective," Jonathan said in a speech broadcast on state television on Tuesday.

His acceptance came hours after both houses of parliament voted in favour of him assuming full powers.

Yar'Adua has been in hospital in Saudi Arabia since November 23 with a serious heart condition and critics say crucial government business is being left unattended.

Jonathan said: "I am fully aware of the responsibilities reposed in me, and I want to reassure all Nigerians that this is a sacred trust, which I shall discharge to my fullest abilities.

"I am deeply humbled and honoured by this great call to duty," he said.

He commended the security services for "their loyalty and devotion to duty during this trying period" in a country with a history of military takeovers.
