Several not-for-profit organisations are helping the aid effort following the massive earthquake (EPA)

A number of local and international aid agencies have mobilised to provide material and financial support for Chile, in the wake of a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake.

A number of Australian and local aid agencies have mobilised to provide material and financial support for Chile, in the wake of a massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the South American nation on February 27th.

Many organisations, including those listed below, have pledged cash, supplies or personnel.

The American Red Cross has made an initial pledge of $50,000 to help relief operations in Chile. Chilean relief teams are providing medical and search and rescue assistance in accordance with the government's operations.

Likewise, the Australian Red Cross has responded to the Chilean quake, saying medical assistance and search and rescue operations are its first priority.

Oxfam Australia also has a team attempting to make their way to the areas of the most need.

Medicins san Frontieres, or Doctors without Borders, are sending personnel from Argentina to the quake zone to help with medical relief in the aftermath of the disaster. More medics will be arriving shortly.

Organistations catering specifically to helping children have also mobilised in the wake of the giant tremor. Save the Children Australia has set up an emergency fund, as has World Vision

UNICEF says it is on standby to help if asked by the Chilean government.

US initiative Mobile Giving Foundation has utilised the ubiquitity OF technology to allow people to donate money using their mobile phone. Americans can pledge $5 or $10 via their mobiles to different charitable organisations.

Religious-based charities, such as The Salvation Army and Caritas are also sending emergency response teams to Chile to help.

AusAid urges anyone who is concerned for friends and family in the area to contact the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on (02) 6261 3305.

Watched SBS World News from Chile this morning reporting on their earthquacke. My emotions have been left raw by what was shown and what I heard. It showed the absolute pain and heartache of the people., particularly the children. Speaking for myself - it made me feel so helpless. Please Aussies. During this period of Political idiocy in Australia and the real needs of people like the Chileans. can we make that extra effort to help out.
