World Cup fans in parts of Somalia have been banned from watching the matches by Islamic militants (AAP)

The Telegraph newspaper in the UK is reporting that two football fans in Somalia have been executed after being caught watching World Cup matches.

Watching the games is banned in areas ruled by Islamic militants, Hizbul Islam, and they’re said to be strictly enforcing the rule by storming houses where people are thought to be watching.

A spokesperson told the Telegraph that people in Somalia should be focusing instead on "pursuing holy jihad".

"We are warning all the youth of Somalia not to dare watch these World Cup matches. It is a waste of money and time and they will not benefit anything or get any experience by watching mad men jumping up and down," he said.

Residents are instead flocking to public cinemas in government-controlled areas of the country to watch matches.

There is nothing holy about being executed or initialising execution.
