A senior Liberal has defended Tony Abbott's decision to appear on Hey Hey It's Saturday instead of The 7.30 Report as a chance for voters to see the lighter side of the opposition leader.

Mr Abbott was booed as he took his place as a judge on the Nine Network variety show's talent segment Red Faces on Wednesday evening.

He left his shadow treasurer Joe Hockey to answer questions in his place on the ABC.

But opposition families spokesman Kevin Andrews says it's nonsense to say the coalition campaign isn't going well because Mr Abbott avoided serious policy questions by choosing to be on the set of a family variety show.

"I think also Australians want to actually see a lighter side of their politicians," Mr Andrews told ABC Radio in Melbourne on Thursday.

"They don't want everybody to be serious every moment of every day."

He said there will be plenty of time during the campaign for Mr Abbott to appear on more serious television shows in the future.

"There's all sorts of Australians who are attracted to all sorts of shows," he said.

"I think a leader should be seen on, heard on as many as possible because people have different tastes."

Red Symons Intelligent?

I watched Red Symons in the past on Hey Hey shows and I'm still wondering now what is his part in the show? apart from some buffoon like behavior and being an obvious sidekick, he's rather un-entertaining with his glib wit and boring style. I thik Abbott handled himself well, and he seemed to genuinely enjoy himself ,,I don't think Gillard has the capacity for geuine laughter and wold have suited Symons to a tee much to the detrement of slapstick entertainment.

starling profound comments here on this site, Were all watching in anticipation as i press the submit button and including a survey on red symons for pm? 4 for 2 against, how revealingly pathetic and we thought channel seven was bad! you must have worked out by now i'm showing skeptical members of the community that sbs doesn't value freedom of expression on its site, this discussion has been indispensable in convincing the sceptics that sbs is a propaganda control device, thank you

Symon's certainly has more intelligence than Abbot & Gillard. Perhaps he would shy away from the silly gaming that goes on in Federal politics.

Lighter side of Tony

Why the criticism? Personally, I get fed up with Kerry O'briens predjudice when he interviews Liberal spokesmen. He's shows his Labour preference every time and has far too much to say for himself, instead of sticking to questions. Good on you Tony.

I don't see the purpose

Hey Hey is such a bogan program anyway. Being part of Red Faces does not give Tony Abbott any credibility.

How about Red Symons for PM?
