It is the first of 30 bikes that will be delivered to Mount Liebig, 325kms west of Alice Springs (Bikes for Bush)

The first steps have been made towards indigenous Australians competing at the Tour de France within the next two years, with a meticulously hand painted bike.

The prized machine worth around $15,000, will be put to auction at the road world championships in October, but it is hoping it will generate tens of thousands of dollars more.

Money from auction will goes to funding the supply of bikes for children in remote indigenous communities.

The move has been supported by cycling's world governing body and the Australian consortium backing it is also finding ways of spreading the sport into some far flung Aboriginal communities.

The bicycle, meticulously hand-painted has been made with a purpose.

It is the first of 30 bikes that will be delivered to Mount Liebig, the home town of the artist Wentja Napaltjarri as part of the Bikes for Bush foundation.

Mount Liebig is located more than 300 kilometres west of Alice Springs.

The Bikes for Bush Foundation is the brainchild of Chris White.

White is also the force behind Australian cycling team Fly V which is on the verge of creating history by competing in next year's pro-tour.

Indigenous Australians have graced various sporting arenas, and it's hoped a place on the biggest stage may not be too far away.

Art and sport are seen as a rare combination, but this is living proof it's a perfect blend.
