The federal government is thought to be close to resolving a review of parliamentary entitlements, reports say.

The federal government is thought to be close to resolving a review of parliamentary entitlements, The Age reports.

The changes are likely to see an increase in the base rate of pay for MPs, with shadow minsters' pay set to increase from $135,000 to about $170,000, the Herald Sun reported on Wednesday.

Superannuation will be boosted, the paper reports, but perks will be lost, which in some cases can add up to $60,000 per year.

The Age reports Labor's Gary Gray thinks there's a case for politicians getting paid more, and has called for an overhaul of the system of payments of renumeration and benefits.

The Special Minister of State says that compared to senior executives, MPs aren't paid enough - his pay was cut from $675,000 a year to around $130,000 when he left Woodside Petroleum, the paper reports.
