Flood Map
This is an AWESOME map. It is definately worth having. It is also good because it shows the areas that have been affected and for those who don't really know much about the floods, it will increase their understanding on just how bad the Queensland floods and cyclones really were. Good Luck to the people of Queensland!
nearmap
the best website for flood maps is www.nearmap.com it is similar to google earth but uses aerial photography, they have done some before and after photography of flood areas in australia and the resolution is fantastic. Again however it is only useful for metro areas as there are no good quality rural aerial photography
Flood Map
This map does not show the true extent of the flood damage, it only shows the areas receiving the media coverage. There are a lot of small communites either under water or isolated surrounded by water. The damage is not restricted to those communties under water, all along the water ways areas are badly damaged, this is a state wide disaster not Ipswich/Brisbane disaster.
Flood Map
This is a great map and does show the worst affected areas, people have to realise though that not only these areas have been affected. Many more have flooded or are still surrounded by water. A lot of areas are running out of food, milk and fuel. This is large scale disaster and a lot of areas aren't getting the media attention since Ipswich and Brisbane flooded. I live in a catchment area and we have a lot of damage to repair.
Floods: a kick for the economy!
I heard on you 6.30 news that the Queensland Floods will probably give "a kick for the economy".Technically, this would be accurate as unfortunately, the way we measure the performance of our economy would count as positive GDP the sums that will be spent in the cleaning up effort. No negative GDP for the all the loss and damage suffered though. This shows how obsessed with economic growth our society has become that we would somehow record a " benefit" out of people's misery.
Civil authority responsibility
Now and only now lets let everyone know when they contemplate buying a property what the extent of this present flood level has been. Lets see civil administrations take responibility for ensuring that peoiple know what the dangers are in local area's of floods, civil authirities know this but still encourage people to settle in flood area's and are quite happy to take rates and taxes from them. Lets see civil authorities take some blame for this tragedy.
