Top CBS foreign correspondent Lara Logan suffered a 'brutal' sexual assault at the hands of a mob in Egypt while covering the downfall of president Hosni Mubarak.

Top CBS foreign correspondent Lara Logan suffered a "brutal" sexual assault at the hands of a mob in Egypt while covering the downfall of president Hosni Mubarak, the network said Tuesday.

"In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers."

The incident took place on Cairo's central Tahrir Square last Friday, the day Mubarak stepped down, CBS said.

Logan was flown to the United States the next day. "She is currently in the hospital recovering," the statement said.

South African-born Logan has covered the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, becoming one of the US media's most recognizable war correspondents. She became CBS News chief foreign correspondent in 2006.

"She and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into a frenzy," CBS said in a statement.

Matt - from Australia, 7 months ago

well i know that if i saw somwone being abused in public and no-one else was helping them i would step in and help as best as i could. even if this meant that i was hurt in the process, saving someone innocent would be the hounourable and courageous thing to do

Assault

Rey - from Australia, 1 year

Some journalists and bad, but some also just want to report the news to you into your homes so you know what is going on world wide. Rape does happen everywhere, but when it is a mass mob attack like this, her story actually could help other women in Egypt who have faced it too. The government of Egypt should apologize for this attack publically not from its their fault, but they do not condone this and will change law for rape and find the rapists. I was raped & u do not come out ok.

Get the facts straight

Allan - from British Columbia, 1 year

She was not raped as described by the press. Always best to check for corroboration of stories. However, she was assaulted, beaten and abused in a horrific way.

Heroes

Michelle - from USA, 1 year

Thank God, Allah, Buddah or whatever power you choose to believe in, for these courageous women that helped saved her. They are true heroes and showed great courage in time of chaos and fear. I hope this wonderful reporter has a speedy recovery and does not let evil win.

Egyptian Military Use Rape As Tool

Skip - from Brisbane, 1 year

it's well known the Eqyptian military use rape as a tool to deter reporters from reporting in Eqypt. If you don't think this "sustained sexual assault" wasn't allowed to be "sustained" by the soldiers turning a blind eye for a while until the Moslem women harrassed them into action, you are a fool. I'll bet my bottom dollar the men involved were actually out of uniform soldiers.

Declare War on Rape

Gary - from California, 1 year

The United States should stand up against rape perpetrated all over the world - including the rape of young women and children held in the "sex trade" in this country.

are you serious?

LT - from Ohio, 1 year

Lora from North Carolina - The US did not FORCE this on Egypt. This was an uprising of their own people against a dictator - in a vacuum not a bad thing. If you are insinuating we didn't fight to prevent it, I can see you half-way. It's a military state now and I'm sure we can all take their word that they'll relinquish their power in 6 mo.. Now revolutions are spreading throughout the region...bad things are coming. I pray for her & family. Now maybe people will see the danger
