American actor Macaulay Culkin, best known for his child roles, has been tipped as a frontrunner to play Julian Assange in an upcoming film about WikiLeaks.

Steven Spielberg has bought the rights to the story of the WikiLeaks saga, the UK's Guardian newspaper reports, and on Thursday it published a list of actors who could take on a film role as the pale-haired Australian.Culkin, 30, along with Orlando Bloom and British actress Tilda Swinton were  named as possibilities to play the 39-year-old.

Adding to the obvious jest of the article came the suggestion that the now deceased John Inman (famous for his role as Mr Humphries in Are You Being Served?) be considered for the part.

The book, written by Guardian journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding, charts Assange's life from his itinerant Australian childhood through to the operations of his controversial secret-leaking website.

The text also tells the inside story of Assange's dealings with The Guardian and the release of secret diplomatic cables.

"It's Woodward and Bernstein meets Stieg Larsson meets Jason Bourne," Guardian editor-in-chief said of the film.

"Plus the odd moment of sheer farce and, in Julian Assange, a compelling character who goes beyond what any Hollywood scriptwriter would dare to invent."

The film is one of a number of productions based on WikiLeaks and its eccentric founder, who has applied to register his name in the UK as an entertainment services trademark, preventing unauthorised endorsements of products and services using his name.

I'm not surprised Spielberg would turn Assange into an American man, or a British woman. Par for the course. He'd probably change Sweden to Canada too.

Tilda Swinton!!!

OMG that would be awesome casting! No, seriously! If Linda Park could pull it off, this would be a cakewalk for Swinton! It'd be great!

Why is this even considered for a movie?

Neil Patrick Harris will be the only person I will ever accept for this role. with that said, I guess I can deal with Culkin. he' s a childhood favorite

David Fincher!!!!

This film would be great if the right director were chosen, my pick would be David Fincher or Paul Greengrass both would bring something different to the screen, either one would be brilliant. I'd love to see Culkin make an impact if he were chosen to portray Assange, making a comeback some would never imagine.
